Banach spaces, the big three theorems, and spectral theory.

Scope

Notes following the functional analysis lecture course. Core results covered:

A first taste

A normed space XX is Banach if it is complete. The dual X∗=B(X,R)X^* = B(X, \mathbb{R}) is always Banach, even when XX is not, since

∥f∥=sup⁡∥x∥≤1∣f(x)∣\|f\| = \sup_{\|x\| \le 1} |f(x)|

inherits completeness from R\mathbb{R}.
